Electric Scooters and E-Bikes: The Impact on Traffic Accident Rates in Urban Areas
Electric scooters and e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular in urban areas as a means of transportation. While they offer a number of benefits over traditional bicycles, there is also a concern that they may increase the number of traffic accidents.

A study conducted in Taiwan found that the number of traffic accidents involving electric scooters increased from just over 2,000 in 2009 to nearly 8,000 in 2016. The number of e-bike accidents also increased during this time, but at a much slower rate. The study found that most of the accidents involving electric scooters were caused by rider error, such as riding on the wrong side of the road or running a red light.

There is also evidence that electric scooters and e-bikes are being used more frequently in urban areas. A study conducted in Los Angeles found that the number of electric scooter trips increased from about 2,000 in 2017 to nearly 50,000 in 2018. The number of e-bike trips also increased during this time, but at a much slower rate.

The increase in the number of electric scooter and e-bike accidents is likely due to the increase in the number of these vehicles on the road. However, it is important to note that the overall number of traffic accidents is still relatively low. In comparison, there were over 6 million traffic accidents in the United States in 2016.

There are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the number of electric scooter and e-bike accidents. For example, riders can be educated on the importance of following the rules of the road. In addition, cities can consider implementing laws that would require riders to wear helmets and other protective gear.
