Overcoming social barriers and fostering inclusivity for electric wheelchair users

Overcoming social barriers and fostering inclusivity for electric wheelchair users
Most people are aware of the obstacles that electric wheelchair users face on a daily basis. Whether it’s a lack of accessible sidewalks, curb cuts, or ramps, or simply the stares and comments from strangers, it’s clear that society still has a long way to go in terms of inclusion.

But there are ways to overcome these barriers and make the world a more inclusive place for electric wheelchair users. Here are a few ideas:

    1. Advocate for change.

If you see a sidewalk that isn’t wheelchair accessible, or a building that doesn’t have an accessible entrance, speak up! Call your local representatives and let them know that this is an issue that needs to be addressed. The more people who speak up, the more likely it is that change will happen.

    2. Educate yourself and others.

If you’re not sure how to best support someone in a wheelchair, educate yourself! There are lots of great resources out there that can help you learn more about the challenges faced by wheelchair users and how to be an ally. Once you’ve educated yourself, share what you’ve learned with others. The more people who are aware of the issues, the more likely we are to see change.

    3. Be an ally.

If you see someone in a wheelchair facing a barrier, offer to help. Whether it’s helping them navigate a curb or carrying their groceries up a flight of stairs, a little assistance can go a long way. And don’t forget to use your voice to speak up for wheelchair users when you see them facing discrimination or exclusion.

    4. Support businesses that are inclusive.

patronize businesses that are inclusive and accessible to wheelchair users. When you support businesses that are making an effort to be inclusive, you’re sending a message that this is important to you and that you want to see more of it.

    5. Get involved in your community.

There are probably lots of great organizations in your community that are working to make things more inclusive for electric wheelchair users. Get involved and lend your time, energy, and resources to their efforts.

By taking these steps, we can all help to make the world a more inclusive place for electric wheelchair users.
