The e-bike is a rapidly growing segment of the bicycle market. In 2017, e-bike sales increased by 43% in the United States and Europe, and the e-bike market is expected to grow to $24.3 billion by 2023[1].
What’s driving this growth?
One reason is that e-bikes are becoming increasingly affordable. In the last few years, the price of lithium-ion batteries has dropped by 50%[2], and the price of e-bikes has followed suit.
Another reason is that e-bikes are becoming more capable. Newer e-bike models can travel further and faster, and can even climb hills that would be challenging for a non-electric bike.
But the biggest reason for the growth of e-bikes is that they’re simply more fun to ride than traditional bikes. E-bikes give you a boost of power when you need it, making it easier to ride up hills and to keep up with traffic. And because e-bikes are electric, you can ride them without getting sweaty!
So what does the future hold for e-bikes?
We asked a few engineers and technologists for their insights on the future of e-bikes. Here’s what they had to say:
“I think the future of e-bikes is very exciting. We’re going to see more and more people using them for commuting and leisure riding. And as the technology improves, we’ll see e-bikes that are even more capable and fun to ride.”
“I see the future of e-bikes as being very bright. I think we’ll continue to see strong growth in sales, and we’ll also see more innovation in the products. We’ll see e-bikes that are lighter, more powerful, and have longer range. We might even see e-bikes that can fold up for easy storage and transportation.”
